Biography:

This actor never officially held the name Kataoka Gadō, but this was his literary name and he was considered the founder of his line.

Early on Nizaemon was expelled from the Asao group because of a dispute, but this was short-lived. During that time he used the name Yamazawa Kunigorō.

****

"Kataoka Nizaemon VII was an outstanding tachiyaku actor and a leading star for the Kamigata Kabuki at the end of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries. He toured a lot in the Nagoya area and spent several long stays in Edo, where his talent was appreciated as much as it was in Ôsaka or Kyōto. His forte were the katakiyaku, jitsugotoshi and oyajigata roles. He was also a good onnagata, especially in the role of Shigenoi in the drama "Koi Nyôbô Somewake Tazuna".

His best roles: Yokozô ("Honchô Nijûshikô"), Higuchi Jirô Kanemitsu ("Hirakana Seisuiki"), Shigenoi ("Koi Nyôbô Somewake Tazuna"), Gotobei ("Yoshitsune Koshigoejô") and Matsuômaru/Kakuju/Shiratayû ("Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami")."
