"The eldest son of Sōjūrō III [who is represented in the Lyon Collection by two spectacular Toyokun I prints] and the daughter of Matsumoto Kōshirō IV. His brother was Sawamura Tanosuke III. He began as Sawamura Gennosuke I, debuting in 1791. He became known as one of the era's top three young stars, along with Onoe Kikugorō III and Ichikawa Danjūrō VII. In 1811, while acting in Edo, he became Sōjūrō IV. His acting was similar to his father's and he acted in the same types of roles. He died before he could fulfill his promise."
