"The actor Iwai Hanshirō VIII held the name of Iwai Kumesaburō III from the 11th lunar month of 1832 to the 1st lunar month of 1864."

His great-great-grandfather was Sawamura Sōjūrō II (1713-1770). His great-grandfathers were Iwai Hanshirō IV (1747-1800) and Sawamura Sōjūrō III (1753-1801). His grandfathers were Iwai Hanshirō V (1776-1847) and Segawa Rokō IV (1782-1812). His father was Iwai Hanshirō VII (1804-45). His father-in-law was Nakamura Kanzaburō XII (1800-51). He had three adopted sons who followed him onto the stage: Iwai Kumesaburō IV (1856-86), Iwai Shijaku III (1840-73) and Iwai Shijaku IV (1854-89).
He was born in Edo in the district of Sumiyoshi-chō in the 10th month of 1829. If our sources are correct Kumesaburō was used in a performance in the month after he was born and was given the name Iwai Hisajorō II at that time. In the "11th lunar month of 1832: great shūmei for the Iwai clan at the Nakamuraza. Iwai Hanshirō V, Iwai Kumesaburō II and Iwai Hisajirō II respectively take the names of Iwai Tojaku, Iwai Hanshirō VI and Iwai Kumesaburō III. They play together in Segawa Jokō II's drama "Goban Tadanobu Yuki no Kuroshiro" and their stage partners are Matsumoto Kôshirô V, Nakamura Shikan II, Ichikawa Yaozō IV and Sawamura Tosshō I."
