This actor held this name from 11/1822 to 2/1844. Before he took this name he was known as Iwai Matsunosuke I from 11/1806 to 10/1822.

Shijaku I's great-grandfather was Sawamura Sōjūrō II (二代目沢村宗十郎: 1713-70). His grandfathers were Iwai Hanshirō IV (1747-1800) and Sawamura Sōjūrō III (三代目沢村宗十郎: 1753-1801). (There are two great prints in the Lyon Collecton of Sōjūrō III.) His father was Iwai Hanshirō V (1776-1847) who is represented in this collection by 12 prints. Shijaku's father-in-law was Segawa Rokō IV (1782-1812). His oldest brother was Iwai Hanshirō VI (1799-1836). His son was Iwai Hanshirō VIII (1829-82). Iwai Matsunosuke II (dates unknown) was a student of his.
