Sanzaburō is wearing a robe with one of his two identifying motifs, the triple umbrella or sanbon-karakasa (三本傘). His other motif is the swallows flying in rain or ame ni nure tsubame (雨に濡れ燕). While the birds don't appear in the finished print they are implied by the rain. (See the attached image.)
