Kuniyoshi Project - toward the bottom of the page Peter Ujilaki and John Fiorillo wrote in Andon 103 from April 2017: "True harimaze-e, whether produced in Edo (e.g., Utagawa Hiroshige) or Osaka (both Sadanobu I (1809–1879) and II... are generally single sheets, usually ōban, characterised by a handful of disparately sized and shaped images appearing within variously shaped cartouches or sections."

"By definition, the criterion for a harmaze-e is the suitability of diverse components for cutting out and attractively arranging on a folding screen (byōbu), (or by extension, an album page). However, because a byōbu is an important household item associated with high-culture elegance, the decorating of such a screen cannot be confused with play. Thus, harimaze-e do not fall under the heading of omocha-e."
