The play Kamakura Sandaiki was originally performed for the puppet theater in 1781. It was composed by Chikamatsu Hanji and Takemoto Saburobē II. It was adapted to the kabuki stage in Osaka in 9/1794. It took until 2/1818 before it was performed in Edo. "The play is based on the fight between the Toyotomi and the Tokugawa clans and the Siege of Ōsaka."

Originally it was performed in 10 acts, but only one survives till today and is only performed every five years or so.
