Carnegie Museum of Art Sebastian Izzard in Hiroshige: an exhibition of selected prints and illustrated books on page 26: "The image of a hawk on a pine branch, with the New Year sun rising behind was a traditional subject of the Kanō school, symbolizing the New Year."

This format is referred to as a nagaōban (長大判) or kakemono (掛け物). The bird is ruffling its feathers in the morning light. The rising sun, the falcon and the pine tree are all good signs and combined they form a triple whammy.

The copy of this print in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston was bought by the Spaulding brothers from Frank Lloyd Wright in 1913.

The Hiroshige goshawk print in the Chazen Museum was published a year earlier by Sanoya Kihei.
